WhatsApp Storage Full? How to Free Up Space on iPhone & Android

Seeing "WhatsApp storage full" or an "iPhone storage full" warning with WhatsApp at the top of the list? Maybe your phone says WhatsApp is using 20 GB, a chat won't download a photo, or you can't take a picture because storage is full. WhatsApp is often one of the biggest space users on a phone, and most of that space is photos, videos and forwarded clips you never look at again.

The fix is rarely to delete your chats. This guide shows how to free up WhatsApp storage: find the biggest files, delete them safely, keep the media that matters, and stop WhatsApp from filling your storage again.

1. Why WhatsApp Storage Fills Up So Fast

WhatsApp saves every photo, video, voice note, GIF and document you receive, including the ones from group chats you barely read. If you see a WhatsApp storage almost full message, this is usually why. Over a few years, a single busy family group can hold several gigabytes of forwarded videos and good-morning images.

Three things make it worse:

  • Auto-download. By default, WhatsApp downloads media for you, so a video is on your phone before you ever tap it.
  • Forwarded media. The same viral video can arrive in ten chats and be stored ten times.
  • Large videos. A few minutes of video can take more space than thousands of text messages.

Text chats are tiny by comparison. Clearing media is where the space is, not messages.

2. How to Find What Is Using Space in WhatsApp Manage Storage

WhatsApp has a built-in tool that shows exactly where your storage goes. The steps are almost the same on Android and iPhone.

  1. Open WhatsApp, tap the three vertical dots (More) and choose Settings. On iPhone, open the Settings tab.
  2. Tap Storage and data.
  3. Tap Manage storage.

At the top you'll see how much space WhatsApp uses on your phone. Below that, WhatsApp lists two review options and then your chats from largest to smallest:

  • Larger than 5 MB. Every big file in one place.
  • Forwarded many times. Viral content that has probably been passed around a lot.

You can also check a single chat. Open the chat, tap its name at the top, then tap Manage storage. WhatsApp shows how much space that chat uses and lists its files from largest to smallest.

Menu names can differ slightly between app versions, but the path is the same.

3. How to Clear WhatsApp Storage by Deleting Large Files

Clear the biggest files first

  1. In Manage storage, open Larger than 5 MB.
  2. Sort by size so the biggest files appear first.
  3. Select the items you don't need and tap the trash icon.

Start here, because a handful of videos often frees more space than hundreds of photos.

Clean up forwarded media

Open Forwarded many times, select everything you don't want, and delete. These files are rarely personal, so it's the safest cleanup in the app.

Clear one chat at a time

Tap a chat in the list to see its media, documents, links and voice notes. Select what you want gone and delete it. Start with the largest group chats, since they usually hold the most.

Select a chat or channel, tap items one by one (or tap Select All), then tap Delete.

If you want to keep a few starred messages while clearing a chat, look for the option to include or keep starred messages before you confirm.

Delete a file by searching for it

If you remember one specific file, you don't need to dig through a chat. Tap the search field at the top of your chat list, choose Photos, Videos or Documents, tap the item you want to remove, and tap Delete.

Know what deletion does

  • Deleting media this way is permanent. You can't download it again from the chat.
  • It deletes the file only for you. Other people in the chat still have it.
  • Copies saved elsewhere on your phone stay put, and you must delete every copy to free the space.

4. Delete WhatsApp Media and Free Up Space Without Deleting Chats

Deleting media from a chat doesn't remove the conversation itself. Your text stays, and the deleted photos or videos can no longer be opened. That makes it the best option when storage is tight.

Compare this with the other options:

ActionWhat it removesKeeps your messages?
Delete media in Manage storagePhotos, videos, files you pickYes
Clear chatAll messages and media in that chatNo
Delete chatThe chat from your listNo

Before deleting anything you might want later, save it elsewhere first, such as your gallery, Google Photos or a computer. If your chats matter to you, make sure a backup is up to date. Our guide on how to restore WhatsApp chats explains how backups work.

5. WhatsApp Storage Full After Deleting? Here Is Why

This is the most common complaint, and it usually has one of these causes.

  • Copies in your gallery. WhatsApp can save received media to your phone's gallery. Deleting it in WhatsApp doesn't always delete the gallery copy, so delete it in your Photos or Gallery app too.
  • Recently Deleted or Trash. Phones keep deleted photos and videos for a while. On many phones, the space only comes back after you empty that folder.
  • Cached data. Apps keep temporary files. On Android, you can clear WhatsApp's cache from the phone's app settings without losing chats.
  • Other apps. WhatsApp may not be the main cause. Check your phone's storage screen to see which apps take the most room.
  • Cloud backups. A WhatsApp backup in Google Drive or iCloud uses cloud storage, not phone storage, but a full Google account can also cause backup errors. See our guide on how to free up Google account storage if that is your problem.

6. WhatsApp Storage Full on Android

If your WhatsApp storage is full on Android, everything in sections 2 to 5 applies. A few extra steps can help:

  1. Open your phone's Settings > Storage (or Apps > WhatsApp > Storage) to see how much space WhatsApp uses.
  2. Use a file manager app to open the WhatsApp media folder and sort files by size. Delete old videos you've already saved elsewhere.
  3. Tap Clear cache for WhatsApp. Do not tap Clear data, because that signs you out and can delete local chat data.

Folder locations differ between Android versions, so use your file manager's search if you can't find it.

7. WhatsApp Storage Full on iPhone

If you get an iPhone storage full WhatsApp warning, start inside the app: Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage, as in section 2. Then work through these steps:

  1. Open the iPhone's Settings > General > iPhone Storage and tap WhatsApp. You'll see the app size and Documents & Data. Documents & Data is where your chat photos, videos and files live, and it's usually the number that grows.
  2. Delete large media inside WhatsApp first (section 3). This is safer than deleting the app.
  3. Turn off Save to Camera Roll in WhatsApp's Settings > Chats, so received photos and videos aren't saved a second time in your Photos app.
  4. Open the Photos app and empty Recently Deleted, so the space is actually released.
  5. Check your iCloud storage too. If iCloud is full, your WhatsApp backup can fail even after you've cleaned the phone.

Only delete and reinstall WhatsApp if you have a recent chat backup, because reinstalling without one can lose your history.

8. How to Stop WhatsApp From Filling Your Storage Again

  • Turn off auto-download. Go to Settings > Storage and data > Media auto-download and choose which media types download on mobile data and Wi-Fi. Set videos and documents to download only when you tap them.
  • Stop saving media to your gallery. Turn off the option that saves received photos and videos to your phone's gallery, so each file isn't stored twice.
  • Lower upload quality. In Storage and data, set media upload quality to a lower setting if you send many photos.
  • Use disappearing messages in busy group chats, so old media is removed automatically.
  • Review storage every few months. A two-minute look at Manage storage prevents the problem returning.
  • Mute or leave noisy groups. Muting doesn't stop downloads, but leaving a group does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my WhatsApp storage full? WhatsApp saves every photo, video, voice note and document you receive, including from groups. Videos and forwarded media take the most space, and auto-download means they are saved even if you never open them.

How do I find large files in WhatsApp? Go to Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage. Open the "Larger than 5 MB" and "Forwarded many times" lists, or tap a single chat to see its media.

Will deleting media delete my chats? No. Deleting media in Manage storage removes only the files you select. Your text messages stay in the chat.

How to fix WhatsApp storage full? Open Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage, delete the largest and forwarded files, then empty the trash in your gallery or Photos app. Turn off auto-download so the problem doesn't come back.

Why does WhatsApp take up so much space on my iPhone? On the iPhone Storage screen, WhatsApp's size is the app plus Documents & Data, which holds your chat media. Years of photos, videos and forwarded clips in busy groups can add up to many gigabytes.

Can I increase WhatsApp storage? No. WhatsApp has no storage limit of its own and uses your phone's space. To get more room, delete files, move photos to cloud storage or a computer, or free space by clearing other apps.

Why is my storage still full after deleting WhatsApp photos? Copies often remain in your gallery or in the Recently Deleted folder. Delete them there and empty the trash. Cached data and other apps can also be using the space.

Is it safe to clear WhatsApp cache? Yes, on Android. Clearing the cache removes temporary files and does not delete your chats. Avoid "Clear data", which signs you out of the app.

How do I stop WhatsApp from saving photos to my gallery? Turn off the option that saves received media to your phone, in your chat or storage settings. Photos you receive will then stay inside WhatsApp only.

Will I lose my chats if I delete and reinstall WhatsApp? Not if you have a recent backup in Google Drive or iCloud, which you can restore during setup. Without a backup, reinstalling can permanently lose your chat history.
